Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz has built his career on a simple belief: the skill of a surgeon's hands should never be reserved only for those who can easily access it.

That belief is what drew him to volunteer with the Order of Malta, Miami Chapter, a Catholic humanitarian organization with a centuries-long tradition of caring for the sick and the underserved. It's also what took him to Santiago, Dominican Republic, for four days of surgery, service, and sacrifice.

A Surgeon's Calling Beyond the Operating Room

As a plastic surgeon, Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz understands better than most what reconstructive and corrective surgery can mean for a patient's life, not just physically, but emotionally and functionally. For patients in underserved communities, that kind of surgery is often out of reach entirely. There are no specialists nearby, no insurance to cover it, and no way to travel for care.

That gap is exactly what motivated Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz to volunteer his time and expertise. He joined a team of more than 100 doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and volunteers for a medical mission to the ILAC Center in Santiago, sponsored by the Cuban Association of the Order of Malta. ILAC Mission itself is dedicated to the health and development of rural Dominican communities, making it a natural partner for this kind of work.

Putting Skill to Work Where It's Needed Most

Over four days, Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz worked alongside specialists in cardiology, pulmonology, internal medicine, pediatrics, urology, emergency medicine, radiology, general surgery, dentistry, and anesthesia. Together, this team:

  • Treated more than 1,000 patients
  • Performed 76 complicated surgical procedures on both adults and children
  • Completed more than 75 ultrasound studies
  • Performed 35 cardiac echocardiograms

As a plastic surgeon, Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz brought a set of skills that can be transformative for patients who have lived with untreated conditions for years (correcting congenital anomalies, repairing injuries, addressing burns or scarring, add the specific procedures he performed if known). For many of these patients, this mission wasn't a follow-up appointment. It was the only chance they would have.

Many patients saw two or three specialists during their visit, allowing for a level of coordinated, comprehensive care that is rare in these communities. Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz's presence, alongside his colleagues, meant that surgical needs could be addressed by someone with the exact training required, not deferred or left untreated.

The Kind of Doctor He Is

What stands out about Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz's involvement in this mission isn't just the number of patients his team treated. It's what the trip reflects about how he practices medicine every day: with precision, with compassion, and with the conviction that his abilities carry a responsibility to serve.

For a plastic surgeon, this kind of work also carries a particular weight. Reconstructive procedures can restore not just function, but dignity, something Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz clearly understands as core to why he became a surgeon in the first place.

A Continued Commitment

Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz's trip to Santiago is part of an ongoing dedication to humanitarian medicine. He continues to look for opportunities to bring his skill as a plastic surgeon to patients who would otherwise go without care, whether through the Order of Malta, Miami Chapter or future missions.

For Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz, being a great surgeon and being a generous one are not separate pursuits, they are the same commitment, expressed in two places: his practice, and the communities he chooses to serve.
