What Is Botox?

Also known as Botulinum toxin type A, Botox is a drug used to correct dynamic facial creases and wrinkles. Botox is specifically the brand name for a specific toxin, although there are other brands such as Xeomin and Dysport. Botox has become the general name used to refer to injectable botulinum toxin fillers.

While it’s true that Botox is derived from the same toxin that causes food poisoning (botulism), in small doses, it can effectively reduce wrinkles and treat several medical issues. This includes severe underarm sweating, chronic migraines, overactive bladders, lazy eye (strabismus), severe neck and shoulder contractions (cervical dystonia), and uncontrollable blinking (blepharospasm). Botox injections are effective treatments because they paralyze or weaken muscles by blocking off certain nerves. Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz will evaluate your needs (cosmetic and/or medical) and customize a plan to get you the treatment you deserve.

Why Should I Get Botox?

Botox can be used to treat a wide variety of conditions, from wrinkles around your eyes to lines around your mouth. Because of its ability to paralyze muscles, it’s also been proven effective for

uncontrolled blinking and lazy eyes. In addition, it can ease symptoms of chronic migraines, overactive bladders, and excessive sweating on your hands, feet, and underarms. If you are dissatisfied with signs of aging or suffering from any of these medical conditions, Botox can provide the help and relief you have been looking for.

What to Expect During Botox

Botox is usually performed in Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz’s office and normally takes no more than half an hour. However, if you are having multiple procedures, this can take longer.

Because Botox injections are minimally invasive, you will not need any sedation, which will also aid in keeping the time short. Topical numbing can be applied 10 minutes prior to your procedure for ultimate comfort. Botox is often referred to as a “lunchtime procedure” as many patients can immediately return back to work post-injection.

The Botox Procedure

Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz will use a thin needle to inject Botox into the targeted areas of your face and body. This needle will inject tiny amounts of the botulinum toxin into either your skin, muscles, or both. There can be multiple injections depending on what you are having treated and where.

Botox FAQ

If you’re unhappy with accumulating wrinkles on your face, Botox injections can help relax the responsible muscles and smooth the overall appearance of your skin. Additionally, if you suffer from several medical conditions, including severe underarm sweating, chronic migraines, overactive bladders, misaligned eyes, and uncontrollable blinking, Botox injections can help ease your suffering.

There are common side effects to be aware of, including swelling, bruising, and mild pain. It’s also possible to have a headache, upset stomach, or even flu-like symptoms. It’s also possible your eyelids may droop, but that will be temporary. If you need prescription pain medication, talk to Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz about it. Do not use Botox if you’re breastfeeding or pregnant.

Depending on what you’re specifically having treated, the effects from your injections can last from three to twelve months. To maintain a wrinkle-free appearance, it’s recommended to repeat your Botox injections every 3-4 months with Dr. Jose Rodríguez-Feliz.

Botox prices vary depending on what areas you would like treated in your face or if you want to address a specific medical condition. If you need Botox for medical reasons, most insurance providers will cover all or part of the procedure. Elective Botox is usually paid out of pocket, and there are financing and payment options available.

Because Botox injections are minimally invasive, no extended recovery time is needed and you can return to your normal activities after a few hours. Note that it will take a full 2 weeks for your injections to take full effect.

If you’re interested in Botox, Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz requires that all new patients in Miami have a consultation with him before scheduling any procedure in order to establish their eligibility. Please note that the best Botox candidates are physically healthy, not pregnant or nursing, at least 18 years old, and have no history of neuromuscular diseases.
