Restore a More Youthful Appearance

If you have bald spots or thinning hair, you may be interested in a hair transplant.

A Hair Transplant will help restore a more youthful appearance and allow you to regain your self-esteem. Board-certified plastic surgeon Jose Rodríguez-Feliz, M.D. specializes in several types of cosmetic procedures, particularly hair transplants. His expertise ensures you will undergo the highest level of service from your first call through your final appointment.

What Is A Hair Transplant?

  • A minimal invasive procedure for androgenic alopecia that transfers individual hair follicular units one-by-one from the back and sides of the head units into areas of hair loss.
  • Both men and women with androgenic alopecia are potential candidates.
  • Most common areas of treatment are hairline, frontal scalp, and/or the crown.
  • Performed under local anesthesia
  • There is no cutting or incisions, which prevents any visible linear scars in the back of the head. This also entails less pain than with previous hair transplant techniques.
  • Most patients are back to work in 5-7 days
  • Hair growth starts 3-4 months after the procedure and results are seen within 9-12 months.
  • The results are natural considering each transplanted follicular unit can be isolated individually.
  • High patient satisfaction and low complication risk make this the “gold standard” of hair transplantation

Believe it or not, hair transplants have been occurring since the 1950s, but modern techniques have resulted in higher rates of success. Generally speaking, a hair transplant moves hair from one part of your head (usually the sides or back) to the areas that are bald or thinning by grafting follicles into your scalp. When you meet with Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz, he will examine your hair along with your medical history and evaluate what can be done for your particular needs. He’ll then customize a design specific to your areas of hair loss.

Hair Transplant Treatment Areas

With the advancement in both technique and technology, hair transplant is now available for the following:

Scalp

The scalp is the most common treatment area for hair transplants. Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz can treat both male and female pattern baldness as well as areas of the scalp that have been affected by trauma or burns.

Eyebrows

Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz can also transplant hair to the eyebrows. This is a popular treatment for people who have lost their eyebrows due to trauma, over-plucking, or a medical condition such as alopecia

Beard

Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz can transplant hair to the beard, mustache, and sideburns. This is a popular treatment for men who have patchy beards or who have lost hair in their beard due to trauma or burns.

Why Should I Get a Hair Transplant?

While many people find ways to hide signs of aging, one inescapable sign is the loss of hair. Loss of hair can result from several factors, including genetics, diet, stress, medications, hormone changes, and trauma (such as a burn or scar). A hair transplant can address your hair loss by implanting your own hair follicles where thinning is present while minimizing the look of scars, allowing our Miami Hair Transplant patients to look and feel better about their appearance.

FUT vs FUE Hair Transplants

FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) removes a strip of hair from the donor area (usually the back of the head) and then separates that strip into individual grafts. The grafts are then transplanted to the areas of the scalp that are balding or thinning.

Advantages:

  • More affordable than FUE
  • Can transplant a larger number of grafts in a single session

Disdvantages:

  • Requires a linear incision to be made in the donor area
  • There is a greater risk of scarring with FUT

FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) involves individual follicular units removed from the scalp. First, the donor area is shaved, and each follicle is extracted one by one. The follicles are then transplanted to the areas of the scalp that are balding or thinning.

Advantages:

  • No linear incision is required
  • There is less risk of scarring

Disdvantages:

  • More expensive than FUT
  • Can only transplant a limited number of grafts in a single session

Direct Hair Implantation

The DHI (Direct Hair Implantation) technique is essentially a modified version of the FUE procedure where hair is transplanted for regrowth. DHI involves taking individual hair follicles and moving them from one part of your scalp to the balding or thinning area. The DHI technique utilizes a specialized, pen-shaped tool that implants the hair follicle at the new location but also cuts the channel in your skin prior to implantation (with FUE, channels have to be cut separately). Since follicles are transplanted one by one, only very tiny scars occur with DHI. This technique can be effective for both male and female pattern hair loss.

What to Expect During a Hair Transplant

For most patients, Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz will use local anesthesia, which means you will be awake but won’t feel any pain for the duration of this outpatient procedure. During hair transplant Miami patients can expect the surgery to last between four to six hours depending on the number of grafts. You will be kept as comfortable as possible during this time.

The Hair Transplant Procedure

The doctor will begin the hair transplant procedure by making tiny incisions in the treatment area and then extracting individual follicular units. He will then make incisions in the donor area and transplant the follicles. Once the surgery is complete, you will be able to go home the same day. In addition, there are many options to choose from that can complement your results. These include the following:

Laser Caps (Capillus RX)

This cap is placed on your head and is studded with lower-strength lasers. They emit photons that penetrate your scalp which targets your follicles and stimulates hair growth and overall metabolism.

Nutrafol

This is a daily, non-drug supplement that improves the overall health and strength of your hair and stimulates hair growth.

Topical Minoxidil

This is a type of topical medication used to treat hair loss by increasing hair growth. It especially targets the effects of male pattern baldness. Minoxidil is typically prescribed in combination with other procedures such as PRP Injections or a surgical hair transplant to enhance your results. Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz recommends HairStim Labs, which allows him to prescribe specific dosage to meet his patients’ unique cases as well as combine minoxidil with other growth factors such as topical finasteride. HairStim Labs then delivers your prescription right to your house.

PRP

PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma. A small vial of blood is drawn from your arm, spun in a centrifuge, and then specific components are injected into your scalp. This stimulates hair growth to complement the results during a hair transplant, and again 4 and 8 weeks after your transplant procedure. Maintaining PRP treatments every 6 months thereafter is recommended for best results. Explore the remarkable effects of PRP treatments in our patient journeys by visiting our hair restoration gallery.

Shampoos

There are several brands of shampoos specially formulated to stimulate transplanted hair follicles for optimum growth. Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz recommends a uniquely formulated prescription shampoo created by HairStim Labs. When you receive a prescription from Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz, they will deliver it right to your home.

Hair Transplant Recovery and Aftercare

After your hair transplant, you can expect some redness and swelling in the treatment area. You will also need to take it easy for the first few days after your surgery.

Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz will give you specific instructions on how to care for your incisions and what activities to avoid. After their hair transplant Miami patients typically take seven to 10 days off from business or social commitments.

It can take several months for the transplanted hair to start growing. And it can take up to a year for the full results of your hair transplant to be visible. But once your new hair starts growing, it will be permanent.

Hair Transplant FAQ

Hair transplants are recommended by Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz when someone feels uncomfortable with their appearance due to thinning hair or bald spots as they can be signs of aging. Others have had some kind of trauma such as a burn, which has left behind patches in the head. If you want a permanent solution for restoring hair loss, a hair transplant could be your best option.

Not usually. However, there is some associated soreness and tenderness. There may also be itchiness from any scabs that develop where the transplanted follicles are, so it’s important not to scratch at them. There will also be some bruising and swelling that should subside after a few weeks.

As this is a minimally invasive procedure, you should be able to return to work within a few days as recovery time is usually short. Keep in mind that transplanted hair will fall out within six weeks with the normal hair cycle, but this is normal and new hair will grow in to replace it. Results can be seen at 3-6 months, however, we advise you to wait up to one year post-op to enjoy your full results.

Not really. Although there may be some scars from the tiny incisions where the follicle grafts are, they will be invisible as your hair grows to cover them.

Although medically-needed hair transplants are usually covered by insurance providers, most of the time this is an elective procedure. In this case, the costs are out of pocket, but there are financing and payment options available. Feel free to ask about these and other concerns during your call or consultation.

Hair transplants are typically priced per graft; the cost can vary depending on the number of grafts you need and the type of surgery you choose. For example, FUT hair transplants typically cost between $4 and $15 per graft, while FUE hair transplants can cost between $10 and $20 per graft.

If you’re interested in a hair transplant in Miami, Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz requires that patients meet for a consultation before scheduling surgery to establish their eligibility. Please note that good candidates generally are in good health. The type of hair they have will also determine if a hair transplant is the best next step.
