What Is Blepharoplasty?

Also known as eyelid surgery, this procedure rejuvenates your eyes by removing extra skin or fat. Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz offers both upper and lower blepharoplasty surgeries. During a Blepharoplasty Miami patients may choose to have both upper and lower blepharoplasty at the same time, along with a facelift or brow lift treatment.

Upper blepharoplasty is meant to treat upper eyelids that have excessive overhanging skin and/or excess bags. This differs from a brow lift, which is actually designed to lift the eyebrow, but the two surgeries are commonly done together.

Lower blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure focused on the appearance of wrinkles, bagginess, or sagging skin under the eye.

Why Should I Receive Blepharoplasty?

As we age, it is common to develop sagging in eyelids, bags under our eyes, or a puffy appearance around our eyes. Blepharoplasty can address these issues and help you to appear younger, as well as resolve vision issues related to obstruction from the eyelid.

There are essentially two main reasons for having blepharoplasty surgery:

Functional: Because overhanging skin can reduce your ability to see, this addresses medical reasons for the procedure.

Cosmetic: If you’re uncomfortable with your appearance, you may elect to have this procedure to fix the extra skin around your eyes and improve self-confidence.

What to Expect During Blepharoplasty

Depending on whether you have upper blepharoplasty, lower blepharoplasty, or both, your procedure can take up to three hours. Your eyelid surgery may be longer if you choose to have other treatments done in combination. You will be placed under IV sedation (no general anesthesia required). After your procedures are finished, Miami blepharoplasty expert Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz will stitch your incisions closed. This ensures your eyelids tighten as they finish healing. You’ll then be helped to a recovery room for monitoring to make sure there are no complications while you come out of sedation.

The Blepharoplasty Procedure

During upper blepharoplasty, extra skin and/or muscle on your upper eyelid will be removed. This will allow your eyelid to still open and close normally. If necessary, Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz may move some extra fat from the middle of the eye to help reshape it. Lower blepharoplasty often involves the removal of excess fat or skin. There are three types of procedures:

Transcutaneous Lower Lid Blepharoplasty:

Known as the pinch technique, this procedure removes extra skin and/or protruding fat through a small incision below the lashes. An extended version of this technique can also help improve moderate mid-face sagginess at the time of the lower lid surgery.

Transconjunctival Lower Lid Blepharoplasty:

This is another common procedure beneficial for patients with lower lid bags and very minor excess skin. Instead, an incision is made on the inside of your lower eyelid.

Tear Trough Correction:

This procedure is designed to keep your orbital bone from looking too prominent, which makes the eyes look hollow and ages your face. This procedure repositions fat from the lower lid to the tear trough area and is done during a blepharoplasty with long-lasting results.

Blepharoplasty FAQ

This type of procedure may be done for cosmetic reasons if you’re unhappy about your appearance as you age. It may also be a functional procedure meant to restore vision by removing overhanging skin. It can also be done for both reasons. This kind of procedure is recommended if you’re uncomfortable with folds, saggy skin, or bags under your eyes. It’s often done with other procedures, such as an upper blepharoplasty or facelift, and together this can rejuvenate your features and help you regain your self-confidence.

Your eyelids are likely to feel sore and tender, which is normal. You will need to apply cold compresses for at least two days after surgery. This will alleviate your discomfort and speed up your overall healing. You can take over-the-counter pain relievers if you need to, or you can talk to Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz about prescription pain medication.

You will have some swelling and bruising around your eyes for up to two weeks. There may also be some bleeding and soreness because of the sensitivity of the skin around your eyes. You’ll be able to start wearing your glasses right away, but you should avoid wearing contact lenses until the swelling is completely gone. You should also avoid any eye makeup. Patients often take at least ten to fourteen days off of work, school, or other obligations to recover.

Not really. Any incisions that are made are usually inside the eyelid crease or hidden in the folds of your eyes. This decreases their visibility as you heal and will fade over time.

Generally speaking, both upper and lower blepharoplasties are elective procedures and as such, not covered by most insurance providers. However, if you require a blepharoplasty for medical reasons, some or all of the costs may be covered. There are also financing and payment options available, which you can review during your consultation.
