What Is Ear Surgery?

Ear surgery is a cosmetic procedure that changes the size, position, or shape of your ears. Ear surgery is usually done on both of your ears in order to keep them symmetrical, though not always. It also does not affect your ability to hear.

There are different ear surgery procedures available. This includes Macrotia surgery for large ears. This is different from pinning in that it uses your own tissue to create a new ear structure. During your consultation for Ear Surgery Miami plastic surgeon Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz, will address your concerns and expectations for the surgery. After reviewing your medical history and examining your ears, Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz will customize a treatment plan for you. You’ll also have before and after photos taken to both plan and highlight the alterations to your ears. Ear surgery is available for both adults and minors.

Types of Ear Surgery We Offer

Ear Augmentation

Whether you feel your ears are too large, too small, or just not symmetrical, ear surgery can help. This type of ear surgery can be used to change the shape, size, or position of the ears.

Ear Pinning

One of the most common types of ear surgery is known as “ear pinning.” This is typically done to set back protruding ears. In this procedure, the surgeon will make an incision in the back of the ear, sculpt the cartilage, and then secure the cartilage back in place with permanent sutures.

Ear Reduction

In some cases, patients may feel their ears are too large. This can be due to genetics or even weight fluctuation. Ear reduction surgery is done to remove excess skin and cartilage from the ear. This will leave the ear smaller but still in proportion with the rest of your features.

Ear Trauma

If you have suffered an injury to your ear due to an accident or trauma, you may be a candidate for reconstructive surgery. This type of surgery can help improve your ear's function and appearance.

Why Should I Receive Ear Surgery?

If you have ears that stick out from your head or appear larger than they should in proportion to the rest of your head, have suffered an injury that changed the appearance of your ears, or have had previous surgery and are not satisfied with the result, ear surgery can be the right solution for you. Not only can you improve the function of your ears, but you can also elevate your self-esteem.

Common Concerns Ear Surgery Can Address

If you are unhappy with the size or shape of your ears, you may be a candidate for macrotia surgery. This surgery can help to improve the appearance of the ears, as well as help with hearing problems. The latest techniques allow for a more natural look and feel to the ears, making the surgical results more likely to be permanent.

Areas of concern that macrotia can help with:

  • The size of the ears
  • The shape of the ears
  • Hearing problems
  • Balance issues

Who Is a Good Candidate for Ear Surgery

Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz meets with every Miami ear surgery patient for a one-on-one consultation to make sure the procedure makes sense for them. The best candidates are in good overall health and don't deal with chronic or long-lasting illnesses that might get in the way of a smooth recovery.

We won’t do ear surgery on patients with active ear infections or skin conditions around the area that could lead to complications. Smoking or using nicotine products is another major hurdle, as it significantly restricts blood flow and can ruin the way a wound heals. If your expectations don't quite line up with what surgery can realistically achieve, or if you aren't able to commit to the downtime and headband requirements during recovery, Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz will be honest with you about exploring other options instead.

How is Ear Surgery Performed?

These procedures usually involve incisions behind or in the folds of your ear. Generally, ear cartilage is folded and repositioned before stitches are used to close the incision. In the case of Macrotia surgery to reduce the size of the ear, a small amount of cartilage is removed and sometimes the earlobe is also reduced.

What to Expect During Ear Surgery

While your procedure depends on your particular needs, in general, the surgery can last up to two hours, if not slightly longer. Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz will provide Miami ear surgery patients with a list of Dos and Don’ts before their surgery so they’ll know how to prepare and what to expect during the procedure.

After surgery, Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz will bandage your ears to protect them. You’ll be disconnected from the sedation IV and taken to a recovery room in Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz’s accredited surgery center to allow the sedation to wear off. Results from ear surgery are immediate.

Ear Surgery Recovery and Aftercare

Most people report very little pain following surgery. A few days after your procedure, the bandages around your ears will be removed. After they’re gone, you notice immediate changes in the appearance of your ears. You will likely have some bruising and swelling around your ears, but this should resolve within a week or two. You will be able to return to work and your normal activities within a few days.

Depending on how extensive the surgery is, your recovery can last two to six weeks. You will need to wear a headband at night for approximately four weeks to keep your ears in the correct position as you heal. It is important to avoid any strenuous activity or contact sports for at least four weeks.

Cost of Ear Surgery

Pricing for ear surgery reflects the specific customization required for your anatomy. Because no two sets of ears are identical, the complexity of the correction will influence the final cost. During your private consultation, we’ll provide a detailed breakdown of the fees so you know exactly what to expect before moving forward.

While most people choose this procedure for aesthetic reasons, there are specific cases where ear surgery is performed to correct a medical issue or functional deformity. In those rare instances, some insurance providers may cover a portion of the costs. However, for most patients, this is an out-of-pocket investment.

To help make the process more manageable, we offer flexible financing options through CareCredit, allowing you to fit the cost of your procedure into a monthly budget that works for you.

Ear Surgery FAQ

Ear surgery should be considered if you’re unhappy with the appearance of your ears, such as feeling your ears are too large or protruding, you’ve suffered trauma to your ears resulting in a change in their appearance, or if a previous ear surgery left you dissatisfied. It’s also possible to elect to have ear surgery for your child if you notice prominent ears at an early age.

Because you will have bandages on your ears, there is likely to be some level of discomfort and possibly itching. You will also be sore and bruised for a few days after the procedure. You can take over-the-counter pain relievers to help with this, or if needed, Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz can prescribe pain medication to take as needed. In addition, you may have a few uncomfortable nights because you need to avoid putting pressure on your ears, especially by sleeping or laying on them.

Incisions are normally made behind the ears and are therefore not visible. In addition, some kinds of ear surgeries do not require incisions. Any visible incision will fade over time.

Yes, the changes made during ear surgery are meant to last a lifetime. Once Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz reshapes the cartilage or pins the ears back into a more natural position, the new structure becomes permanent as the tissue heals. While your face will continue to age naturally over the years, your ears won't "pop back" to their original shape.

It is actually very common to combine ear surgery with other facial treatments. Many of our adult patients choose to have a liquid rhinoplasty, chin augmentation, or even non-surgical skin treatments like the S-Glow Program at the same time to create a more balanced look for the entire face.
