If you’re uncomfortable with the shape or size of your ears, you can undergo ear surgery to alter their appearance.
Ear surgery is designed to correct various issues with both the shape and size of your ears. You can choose to have this type of procedure after previous surgery, an injury, or if you’re unhappy with the look of your ears. Jose Rodríguez-Feliz, M.D., is a board-certified plastic surgeon who specializes in deep plane facelifts and eyelid surgery. From their first call to the office all the way through post-op, patients are treated the same as they would be at a five-star resort. Ear surgery, which is also known as otoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure that changes the size, position, or shape of your ears. Ear surgery is usually done on both of your ears in order to keep them symmetrical, though not always. It also does not affect your ability to hear.
Ear surgery does not only consist of otoplasty - there are different procedures available. This includes Macrotia surgery for large ears. This is different from pinning in that it uses your own tissue to create a new ear structure. During your consultation for Ear Surgery Miami plastic surgeon Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz, will address your impoartant concerns and expectations for the surgery. After reviewing your medical history and examining your ears, Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz will customize a treatment plan for you. You’ll also have before and after photos taken to both plan and highlight the alterations to your ears. Ear surgery is available for both adults and minors.
Whether you feel your ears are too large, too small, or just not symmetrical, ear surgery can help. This type of otoplasty procedure can be used to change the shape, size, or position of the ears.
One of the most common types of ear surgery is known as “ear pinning.” This is typically done to set back protruding ears. In this procedure, the surgeon will make an incision in the back of the ear, sculpt the cartilage, and then secure the cartilage back in place with permanent sutures.
In some cases, patients may feel their ears are too large. This can be due to genetics or even weight fluctuation. Ear reduction surgery is done to remove excess skin and cartilage from the ear. This will leave the ear smaller but still in proportion with the rest of your features.
If you have suffered an injury to your ear due to an accident or trauma, you may be a candidate for reconstructive surgery. This type of surgery can help improve your ear's function and appearance.
If you have ears that stick out from your head or appear larger than they should in proportion to the rest of your head, have suffered an injury that changed the appearance of your ears, or have had previous surgery and are not satisfied with the result, ear surgery can be the right solution for you. Not only can you improve the function of your ears, but you can also elevate your self-esteem.
These procedures usually involve incisions behind or in the folds of your ear. Generally, ear cartilage is folded and repositioned before stitches are used to close the incision. In the case of Macrotia surgery to reduce the size of the ear, a small amount of cartilage is removed and sometimes the earlobe is also reduced.
While your procedure depends on your particular needs, in general, the surgery can last up to two hours, if not slightly longer. Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz will provide Miami ear surgery patients with a list of Dos and Don’ts before their surgery so they’ll know how to prepare and what to expect during the procedure.
After surgery, Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz will bandage your ears to protect them. You’ll be disconnected from the sedation IV and taken to a recovery room in Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz’s accredited surgery center to allow the sedation to wear off. Results from ear surgery are immediate.

Most people report very little pain following surgery. You will likely have some bruising and swelling around your ears, but this should resolve within a week or two. You will need to wear a headband at night for approximately four weeks to keep your ears in the correct position as you heal. You will be able to return to work and your normal activities within a few days. It is important to avoid any strenuous activity or contact sports for at least four weeks.
If you are unhappy with the size or shape of your ears, you may be a candidate for macrotia surgery. This surgery can help to improve the appearance of the ears, as well as help with hearing problems. The latest techniques allow for a more natural look and feel to the ears, making the surgery results more likely to be permanent.
Areas of concern that macrotia can help with:
Ear surgery should be considered if you’re unhappy with the appearance of your ears, such as feeling your ears are too large or protruding, you’ve suffered trauma to your ears resulting in a change in their appearance, or if a previous ear surgery left you dissatisfied. It’s also possible to elect to have ear surgery for your child if you notice prominent ears at an early age.
Because you will have bandages on your ears, there is likely to be some level of discomfort and possibly itching. You will also be sore and bruised for a few days after the procedure. You can take over-the-counter pain relievers to help with this, or if needed, Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz can prescribe pain medication to take as needed. In addition, you may have a few uncomfortable nights because you need to avoid putting pressure on your ears, especially by sleeping or laying on them.
Incisions are normally made behind the ears and are therefore not visible. In addition, some kinds of ear surgeries do not require incisions. Any visible incision will fade over time.
Because this procedure is customized for each patient, the costs will vary. While cosmetic surgeries are not usually covered by insurance providers, if you need ear surgery for medical reasons, some or all may be covered. There are also financing and payment options available.
Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz requires that all patients in Miami ear surgery patients have a consultation beforehand to establish their eligibility. Please note that good candidates are in general good health and do not have any chronic or long-lasting diseases.
Depending on how extensive the surgery is, your recovery can last two to six weeks. A few days after your procedure, the bandages around your ears will be removed. After they’re gone, you notice immediate changes in the appearance of your ears. You may also need your stitches taken out a few weeks later.
