Women’s Intimate Wellness

Self-confidence is essential for a woman’s overall well-being, yet many women feel insecure about the look of their external genitalia or experience discomfort while being intimate with their partner. Physically-based anatomical concerns and mental anxiety can both interfere with sexual satisfaction, but Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz performs labiaplasty and other vaginal rejuvenation procedures that can help enhance a woman’s self-esteem and intimacy.

Labiaplasty and other vaginal rejuvenation procedures can improve a wide array of concerns including:

  • Enlarged or hanging inner vaginal lips (labia minora) that cause insecurity, discomfort during sex or friction while exercising
  • An asymmetrical appearance
  • Sagging labia majora (outer vaginal lips) caused by childbirth, episiotomy repair, weight fluctuation, menopause and the natural aging process
  • Excess fullness or drooping of the mons (the “mound” above the pubic bone)
  • Decreased arousal due to excess skin covering the clitoris

Labiaplasty can improve the appearance as well as functional concerns related to the inner vaginal lips (or labia minora). Labia minora reduction involves trimming excess tissue to create a neat, youthful appearance while preserving natural contours and sensitivity.

Although a majority of women undergo labiaplasty for aesthetic reasons, Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz also sees patients who experience friction and tugging while running or biking. Some women turn to labiaplasty to feel more comfortable both physically and mentally when wearing tight clothing such as workout pants and bathing suits. Labiaplasty can also be used to reduce excess skin surrounding the clitoris that may interfere with sexual arousal.

Labiaplasty is a fast, relatively uncomplicated procedure that is usually performed under local anesthesia with oral sedation. Recovery generally takes from three to five days, and post-surgical discomfort is manageable with over-the-counter pain medication and the use of cold compresses. It takes up to two weeks for incisions to fully heal, but it is important to avoid intercourse and any activity that stretches or pulls on the labia for four to six weeks after surgery. Once recovery is complete, labiaplasty scarring is nearly undetectable.

Many women have additional concerns that extend beyond the labia minora. Whether performed on their own or in conjunction with labiaplasty, these procedures can further refine the appearance of the external genitalia.

Monsplasty: The mons is the area of padding that sits on top of the pubic bone, and some women may be bothered by excess fullness while others wish to improve drooping or excess skin. To achieve a patient’s desired outcomes, monsplasty can include liposuction, removal of excess skin and tightening underlying muscle and tissue to give this area a “lift.”

Labia majora reduction: Depending on the patient’s unique anatomy and desired outcomes, Dr. Rodríguez-Feliz can take several approaches to refining the look of the labia majora (or outer vaginal lips). Liposuction can help reduce fullness, while excess skin can be removed to reshape the labia majora and eliminate a saggy appearance.

Fat grafting: In some cases, a woman may want to add fullness to the labia majora. Fat grafting acts as an all-natural, long-lasting “filler” that restores a plump, youthful appearance to the outer vaginal lips.
